Genetically engineered food have long been touted by the Biotechnology Industry Organization as being highly improved to tolerate adverse conditions and increased yields with lower inputs. Monsanto ran ads warning of an exploding world population and pointing to GMOs as the solution for meeting the food needs. From scientific reports, these claims have been found to be false and GE crop yields are not higher than non-GE crops. In fact, GE crops have devastating effects on the environment, economy and human health. A World Bank and UN report in 2009 concluded that GE food have no role to play in relieving hunger and poverty. The cost of buying and maintaining GE crops and the huge losses incurred made over 17,000 farmers in India to commit suicide in 2009 alone.
