As polls for the Proposition 37 draw close, the debate on labeling of genetically engineered foods is heating up. The American Association for Advancement of Science or AAAS is of an opinion that labeling of genetically engineered foods is misleading and would spread alarm or apprehension among consumers. The press release by this association even says that labeling of genetically engineered foods is not supported by any credible scientific evidence. Such labeling will only fuel the perception that these foods are unnatural and support the false notion that the crops are untested. However, there are several opinions which challenge these claims. David Schubert, the head of the Cellular Neurobiology Laboratory at Salk Institute, has stated that GM crops do not go through any testing. Such statements are then being countered by announcements from AAAs and numerous other organizations which say that GM foods are safe for consumption. All in all, the whole debate is rather well timed, and is taking place just a week before the polls in California.
