There are many disadvantages of GMOs. Some are related to environment, some to farmers’ rights and some to human health. However, amongst all of these, the most worrisome would probably be the many disadvantages that involve human health as these may not only affect adults but more importantly, they may affect children. Their effect in children may come early on or these effects may cause irreparable damage to children during their adult life. Some may be “simple” and some may be quite complex that solutions may be hard to find.
Why Are There GMO Safety Concerns?
Unlike the first time when GMOs were introduced to the public, researches are now beginning to surface showing that GMOs may indeed cause health problems in individuals hence the increasing number of GMO safety concerns. Recent researches show that the human gut bacteria can easily absorb genetic material coming from GMO food. Although absorption was seen at low levels, this still creates a possibility of the human body being able to absorb genetic material from GMOs themselves. It should be remembered that this study was done for a short term. Long-term studies have yet to be performed.
One other study performed that is relevant to GMO safety involves studies on RBST, a hormone introduced in cows for increased milk production. There have already been studies showing that RBST can trigger the activation of growth factors in the human body which are oftentimes associated with cancer formation. Researchers are also already starting to show the possibility of humans forming some form of antibiotic resistance and even allergies all because of GE food consumption. With all these pieces of information coming out, indeed, there is a lot to be concerned about when it comes to the safety of GMOs.
Simple Facts On GE Health Risk
Researches made on a molecular level have already started to show how inserting genes at certain genetic areas of the host organism may render the organism unstable by producing a totally different effect on the organism other than the intended outcome. In other studies, attempts to introduce a BT toxin producing gene in crops seems to be more dangerous than using pesticides using BT. On a scary level, animal experiments ranging from rats to sheep have already shown that consumption of large amounts of GE foods lead to early death in these animals. There already has been a report of farmers working in BT cotton farms developing certain types of allergies.
With so many of these new reports sprouting up, it is no wonder that people are not being made more aware of GE health risks. It is because of this newfound awareness that consumers and different individuals are beginning to be more concerned about the proliferation of GMOs.
What we know for now is this:
1). GMOs may cause allergies
2). GMOs may cause antibiotic resistance which is truly bad for future forms of sickness and disease
3). There is a big possibility that GMOs may lead to cancer formation
The problem is that the generation to be affected the most is the younger generation, as they are the ones left with no option except to consume these GE foods. It is for these very reasons that the regulation of GMOs as well as proper dissemination of information be made possible in order to give consumers a fighting chance.
