A group of earth defenders comprising of organic and non-GMO farmers and gardeners has planned to urge voters to pass a County ordinance that will protect their livelihood, farms and gardens from damage by prohibiting the growing of genetically engineered crops in Jackson County. They strongly sense threatened by the recent introduction of GMO crops within crosspollination range. The group of earth defenders has filed potential petition with the Jackson County Clerk and if voters pass the petition in November, the law would take effect the following year. The volunteers are preparing to gather signatures and gathered 4,668 valid signatures of registered voters in the County until now.
