A 2008 petition by the NRDC urging the EPA to revoke 85 2,4-D tolerance and product registrations has been denied by the agency, citing contradicted studies and results of studies conducted by Dow, 2,4-D manufacturers, which showed no reproductive problems in rats or their off springs. But numerous studies including a research by the EPA found increased occurrences of birth defects in babies born in counties with high rates of 2,4-D use. Scientists have linked this active ingredient of Agent Orange to cancers, hormone disruption, gene mutations and neurotoxicity. 2,4-D is widely used and if Dow's 2,4-D-resistant corn is approved, its usage will be greatly increased.
