After a brief legal tussle, the French government has banned GM corn made by Monsanto. This is coming after a similar ban in 2008 was overturned last November when the biotech company challenged it in court. The government has moved swiftly in restoring the ban, though temporarily. Foremost French anti-GM crops campaigner and European MP Jose Bové called it a "good news" saying "the risk has been avoided. We now have a guarantee that they will not be any GM maize in 2012." He called for stricter measures to be taken, suggesting that France should follow Germany's example where GM crops are not planted within a one kilometer range of non-GM crops.
