GE Food: An Environmental Time Bomb Waiting to Explode


The science of engineering crops genetically is primarily aimed at making the plant resistant to glyphosate – a chemical in Monsanto’s Roundup herbicides – allowing for the extensive use of the herbicide. Dr. Don Huber, a plant pathologist for 50 years discovered that glyphosate destroys the immune system of plants (like AIDS in humans) and it alters the natural balance of soil microbes, creating new ‘super-pathogens’ that are very harmful to plants and the animals that consume them. An example is the toxic botulism which is now a leading cause of death in dairy cows, infertility and miscarriages in cattle, horses, pigs, sheep and poultry. In a letter to the Secretary of Agriculture, Tom Vilsack, Huber explained that this new infectious agent is “widespread, very serious and in much higher concentration in Roundup Ready soybeans and corn.” He made an appeal for more funds to continue the research and a delay in approving genetically engineered alfalfa till researches are concluded. His appeals fell on deaf ears, GE alfalfa was approved and GE foods flood the market.
