Information is power; and making a clear and reliable GMO definition is what the US government should do first. Couple that with the USDA and FDA requiring GMO producers to label their products, and the consumers will be well informed regarding the products that are displayed on the groceries.
By having well-informed consumers, they will be able to make the choices on their own. And if you, for example, know which products are GM food or are tainted with GMO ingredients then you will be able to stay away from these genetically modified products and keep yourself safe.
Messing With Nature – Examples Of Genetic Engineering
But no matter how advantageous GMO products reportedly are, there will always be problems that will crop up. After all, genetically modifying nature’s work, will most likely mess with the delicate balance of nature.
One of the examples of genetic engineering messing with nature is when goats and sheep in India died after reportedly grazing on the genetically modified Bt cotton. Farmers and shepherds in Warangal district of Andhra Pradesh claim that their flocks of sheep and goats got ill then died after consuming Bt cotton left over in the fields.
Another problem is when dairy cows are fed with genetically engineered alfalfa. The GE alfalfa, which is designed to be resistant to Monsanto’s weedkiller, Roundup. When dairy cows are fed with GE alfalfa, they wont produce natural milk. The milk they produce will be tainted by the GE alfalfa that they feed on.
Dairy cows that are also injected with the Bovine Growth Hormone (rBGH) may produce more milk. However the milk that these cows produce might turn out to be harmful to milk drinkers. Milk from these modified cows may contain pus from the wounds that the cows have. Another problem is that the Insulin-Like Growth Factor-1 (IGF-1) also ends up in the milk.
Nature has done a good job of providing us with everything that we need. If we mess with nature, there will most likely be trouble. We’ve seen what over fishing does. We’ve also seen what happens when chemicals are injected into people’s faces – there are times that the results aren’t at all pretty. What were we expecting when we mess with our food supply on a genetic level?
Genetic Engineering Articles Show How Hazardous GMO Really Is To Your Health
To protect yourself from these genetically engineered organisms, the best thing you can do is to arm yourself with information. And as with many things, the internet can also be a good source of genetic engineering articles.
But you should be careful when you read articles on genetic engineering from the internet. After all, not everything that you read on the internet is true and reliable. Still, there are reliable sources; especially when you read articles from medical and educational sites.
Take care in choosing articles and put the knowledge that you gain from these sources into good use. By doing so, you will be able to keep yourself safe.
