GM foods or GMO, as they are more popularly called, are created by introducing specific genes from different species (such as animals, bacteria, viruses and other plants) into the genetic material of certain plants or crops in order to introduce or heighten desired characteristics, such as an improved nutritional profile, herbicide resistance pest resistance, drought–tolerance and ability to withstand cold. The trouble is that while the process of genetic manipulation has been developed, there is still no complete understanding of the workings of DNA and the gene. This means that the full impact of genetic manipulation, GMO health risks and dangers of genetic engineering on human food supplies are still unknown.
While biotechnology companies and their proponents are very insistent on promoting the benefits of genetic engineering, the fact remains that many GMO health risks have surfaced in recent years that have been systematically been kept from public knowledge. This has not stopped independent scientists and organizations from investigating the effects of GMO food further, revealing more GE health risks as more and more GMO-derived foods make their way into ordinary people’s homes.
Genetic Engineering Disadvantages Every Home Should Know About
GMO foods are widely distributed and sold without any government-required testing prior to release. This is why many different groups of concerned scientists and non-government organizations warn about the lack of conclusive evidence firmly attesting to the safety of GMO foods for human consumption–since many of these food products were not in existence in the last 20 years, there is no long-term proof of any good or ill effects they may have on humans. Even more alarming is the emergence of independent reports of one of the biggest genetic engineering disadvantages affecting the consumer in the short period that has passed since GMOs were introduced– GE health risks that can endanger him and his family alike.
At the top of the list is the issue of allergen city. With the use of genes unrelated to the species of the plant in question, there is a very grave danger of unknowingly transferring allergens to the GMO, putting individuals at risk for allergic reactions to foods they have not been allergic to before, as demonstrated in one case where soybeans genetically modified with genes from the Brazil nut resulted in allergic reactions for many. Antibiotic resistance is another big issue. Because many GMO crops are created using genes from bacteria or viruses, this poses the danger of introducing antibiotic-resistant organisms into the individual’s system (particularly the digestive tract) which, given the unpredictable nature of GMOs, can be very hard to treat with the current crop of medicines.
What They Aren’t Telling Us About Genetic Engineering Dangers
Even more GMO safety concerns are emerging in many parts of the globe, including the United States. Reports have cited cases where genetically engineered potatoes have been associated with abnormal growths in mice that have been fed with them. Other studies have cited effects such as autoimmune diseases, infertility, gastro-intestinal problems and alarming changes in liver, kidney and brain size of test animals– health effects which are also likely to occur in humans.
One of the very real genetic engineering dangers is that of genetic pollution. GMOs, once released in the environment, can be unpredictable and cannot be held back, spreading through nature and contaminating non-GE plants and animals resulting in the loss of non-GMO food choices in the future.
