There are many different laboratory methods which may be used for detecting the presence of GMO in different types of food. However, these different methods still have their shortcomings.
Detection of unknown GMOs can be quite difficult at this point since different companies as well as countries have different information regarding these GMOs. It’s like trying to find missing puzzle pieces. A common database which can be used as reference for different countries should be developed as this can provide ample information as to gene sequences needed in order to detect these unknown GMOs.
What Risky Changes Is GMO Renewable Resources Doing To The Environment?
GMO renewable resources are the latest to be developed when it comes to genetic engineering. Scientists are now trying to develop plants that can be used as resources for different types of materials and even renewable energy. However, the question remains as to the dangers that it may pose to the environment.
A case in point would be the Australian eucalyptus tress being developed by the GMO company ArborGen. The ones being developed by the said company are supposed to be resistant to weather changes, specifically winter. These trees are known to grow faster than other trees thus making them highly useful in terms of lumber production. However, as some scientists have mentioned, the danger lies in the fact that these trees also take up a lot of water and mass-producing them may greatly decrease groundwater levels.
Added to that, these trees are also highly flammable thus increasing the risk for forest fires. Lastly, changing the genetic makeup of such plants to make them resistant to environmental changes may enable them to spread beyond the locales where they are intended to stay.
It’s been said over and over again that there are many risks involved in allowing the spread of GMOs. Be it in the household or in the environment, the use of GMOs should be well-studied as the dangers that they pose in the future may be something that can no longer be corrected.
