No other than the United States of America. As gmo statistics show, the US plants the most number of GMO crops, with 64 million hectares in 2008. The US is followed by Brazil with 21.4 million hectares, Argentina 21.3 million hectares, India 8.4 million hectares and Canada 8.2 million hectares.
There are fourteen million farmers who plant genetically modified crops globally. Developing nations account for the majority of these farmers, with 13 million farmers coming from these countries. The GM crops that are planted the most are the soybeans, maize, cotton and rapeseed.
Soybean is planted in 65.8 to 69 million hectares. The nations that plant the most GM soybeans are found in North and South America with the the US ranking first followed by Brazil, Paraguay, Chile, Mexico.in 2009 Costa also planted soybeans.
As for corn, which is planted in under 42 million hectares, the US still ranks first, followed by Argentina, Canada, South Africa, Uruguay, the Philippines, Chile and Honduras.
In the case of GM rapeseed, it is grown in 6.4 million hectares. In this case Canada ranks first in most area planted, followed by the USA and Australia.
In the US, GM sugarbeet was planted in a total field area of 485,000 hectares. Canadian farmers also plant genetically modified sugar beet. These are plated in around 15,000 hectares.
Why Labels Can Help With GMO Detection
Now the problem with these GMO crops is that they end up at our grocery stores without our knowing. How did this happen, you ask? Well, this dilemma actually started when the US government – through the FDA and USDA – did not require producers of GMO products to label their items.
This creates a very real problem since you, the consumer, won’t have any way of knowing whether the items that you buy at your favorite grocery store isn’t from a GMO batch or was in no way tainted by GMO ingredients. There will be no form of GMO detection at all.
This practically eliminates your right to choose since you won’t have a way of knowing at all. And until the US government listens to the consumers and the natural growers, you will have to take steps to protect your health from the risks presented by GMO food. It might take a bit of learning, but it is your health and that of your family’s that you will end up keeping safe.
Will GMO Renewable Resources Really Work?
Natural renewable resources are sources that are replaced naturally and in time. However with GMO crops being published as sturdier than their natural counterparts, there is a claim that GMO crops might be better at replenishing our natural resource.
But are really GMO renewable resources that effective? A published study by a team financed by biotech companies like Monsanto found that GMO fruits and vegetables do not last any longer than their regular counterparts. If this is the case, then renewing GMO resources would still have to be done the conventional way. In this manner then, GMO renewable resource are no better than natural renewable resources.
