GMOs Contributing to Increase in Obesity and Organs Damage


A study published in the International Journal of Biological Sciences has shown that GM foods are contributing to the obesity epidemic and increasing cases of organ damage. GM corn fed to mice increased their body weight by about 3.7%. This is the first scientific report on the comparative analysis of blood and organ system data. The increase in body fat was accompanied by an increase in the weight of the liver which went up by 11%. This is coming after another study linked the use of Monsanto’s Bt biopesticides to the death of kidney cells in humans. According to Gilles-Eric Seralini, an expert member of the Commission for Biotechnology Reevaluation, “we have proved that GMOs are neither sufficiently healthy nor proper to be commercialized. Each time, for all [tested] three GMOs , the kidneys and liver which are the main organs that react to food poisoning, had problems.” Safety hazards posed to human health, the ecosystem and environment has made GM crops to be banned in several countries.
