There is a growing discontent by consumers over the demand to know what is in their food. With over 80% of processed foods in US stores containing GM ingredients, seventeen states are proposing legislations for GMO labeling. At the federal level, House Representatives, Dennis Kucinich (OH) and Peter Defazio (OR) and Senator Barbara Boxer (CA) are pressing for legislation on GMO labeling. The Right2Know March organized consumers, activists and businesses who took a 313 miles walk from New York to Washington DC to express labeling demands. Also, the Center for Food Safety is petitioning the FDA to make GMO labeling mandatory as part of the JustLabelIt Campaign; with a goal of getting 1 million signatures supporting the petition. Recent nationwide polls show that 93% of Americans support GM labeling. As ABC News stated, "such near-unanimity in public opinion is rare."
