Liberty Link Rice, the first genetically modified crop that was allowed to be planted in the United States, is rice made resistant to the Liberty or Basta herbicide. While it was developed to help make “better rice” there are still a lot of reasons why they shouldn’t be planted in our farms. Here are the top reasons:
Liberty Link Rice was developed to be resistant to Liberty or Basta herbicide. However, the Liberty or Basta herbicide (glufosinate) is a herbicide which kills everything green. It is used mostly for genetically modified canola, soy and corn, among others. Glufosinate is also an herbicide which has caused birth defects in experimental animals. If Liberty Link Rice is planted in farms, that means the dangerous herbicide will still be used.
Also there is the problem that the Liberty Link Rice will affect the environment by cross-pollinating with other plants in the environment. If this happens, there are those who claim that the cross-pollination might develop super weeds, or weeds that are resistant to the glufosinate herbicide.
The third reason why Liberty Link Rice should be banned forever from our farms is that it can contaminate the other rice crops, as what experts and farmers feel.
Experts Are Fearful That GMO Rice Will Contaminate Rice Supply
Many of those in the know had always warned that GMO rice can easily contaminate the rice supply and pass on their traits to other rice (as well as other plants). But the real reason why authorities and experts are fearful that the GMO rice will contaminate the rice supply, is that if they do, the US will not be able to export the rice. The US may allow the use of genetically modified crops, but other countries do not. In fact, they will not import genetically modified crops and even crops that might have been contaminated by GM plants and vegetables.
This incident has already happened once in 2006 and because of the contamination damaged rice prices back then. This led to a lawsuit and had Bayer Crop Science paying $50 million to farmers because of the incident.
Please Pass The Non GMO Rice, Says Happy Parents
As for parents, they of course, would rather feed non-GMO rice and non gmo vegetables to their children to protect the health of the children. But doing so is not as easy as it would seem. First of all, the US government doesn’t require the labeling of the genetically modified products. So there will be no way for the parents to know whether the product they are holding is a GMO or non-GMO item.
But the parents aren’t alone in their fight for the safety of their kids’ health. Organic farmers are labeling their products. It is their way of providing the consumers with the information that the consumers need, to make an informed decision. Parents should do well to buy these labeled products as not only are they informed, they are also helping the organic farmers in the process.
