For many years now, the advantages of genetic engineering in agriculture have always been built up. Many so called studies and testimonies claim the pros of genetic engineering in agriculture will be the Holy Grail that would end global hunger and poverty. However, there seems to be more disadvantages to using genetic engineering in agriculture than genetic engineering advantages.
1. Safety Not Assured
First of all, no one is definitely sure that using genetic engineering in agriculture would be safe for humans. Laboratory and medical tests have so far been unable to give conclusive results that genetically modified crops would be safe for human consumption, that consuming genetically modified foods wouldn't result in harmful effects on humans in the long term.
2. Gene Tainting
There are also risks that the traits of the genetically modified crops would taint normal crops. While genetically modified fruits and vegetables were designed to have specific traits, they weren’t supposed to be transferred to other crops since there is a chance that it would have negative results.
For example, farmers don’t want herbicide resistant crops passing on their resistances to the weeds. Imagine if these tainted weeds were to overwhelm farms since it would be very difficult to get rid of them?
3. No Proper Labeling
Right now, the United States Government doesn’t require the GMO producers to label their products. And whatever their reasons might be, these producers of genetically modified crops aren’t labeling their products – not even if a lot of consumers are petitioning that these GMO corporations do so.
By doing so, the US government and biotech companies like, Monsanto, are robbing consumers of their ability to exercise their right to choose which food they want to eat.
4. Abuse of Chemicals
If a particular crop is pesticide or herbicide resistant, there is a chance that the farmers who use these kinds of genetically modified crops have nothing to lose if they decide to use more pesticides and/or herbicides while growing the said crops. However, the traces of the chemicals could end up on dinner tables.
Doctors Slam GMO Safety Claims
And to further add fuel to the debate regarding the safety and advantages of GMO crops, not all specialists and experts are certain that GMO food is safe for human consumption. Some experts are questioning the GMO safety.
With all these claims and counter-claims that the proponents of GMO crops and the proponents of natural farming, those that are at the losing end are the consumers. And as the debate drags on, there will be no definite answers and no definite benefits for producers and consumer alike.
Which brings things to the truth about GMO advantages.
Exposed - The Truth About Claims Of GMO Advantages
Advantages might always sound well and good, but the GMO advantages can never erase the numerous disadvantages that using genetic engineering in agriculture brings to the table. After all, what really would be the advantages of messing with Mother Nature’s works? How certain is everyone that doing so would only bring good things?
