A research team at the University of Caen, France, led by Gilles-Eric Seralini have found that the pesticide activity of Bt toxins which creates pores in the membrane of cells in the insect gut has the effect of killing cells in the human kidney. Bt biopesticide confers insect resistance in GM crops and its combined use with glyphosate herbicides constitutes 39% of globally cultivated GM crops, yet this is the first study that provides evidence on the toxicity of Bt protein in human cells. The researchers are startled that this "surprising outcome was completely overlooked" in past assessments. Already, Monsanto's Bt corn varieties are outlawed in Hungary, Austria, Germany, Greece and Luxembourg as the French government is now seeking an EU-wide ban of the GM corn.
